Mardin; Top Travel Destination for Turkish Tourist

Mardin, located in southeast Turkey, is on a rocky mountain overlooking the Mesopotamian plains. The religious architectures of traditional stones make up the whole town and build a golden town. You find several old mosques, churches and madrasas along cobble stone streets. This exotic town scape is registered World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO as the best preserved example of Anatolian soil.

Mardin is one of top travel destination for Turkish but not so famous for foreigners. You may not even have heard the name of Mardin before. Mardin Stone Houses; Located on the southern slope of the hill, houses are spreading up and down from the outskirts of the castle to the plain in the form of terraces. They are built using yellow limestone, which is abundantly mined in Mardin. This scene, which symbolizes the town of Mardin,will be unforgettable for your visit.

Historical Buildings and Ruins;

Please do not forget, Mardin is a town full of history from Msopopotamia ages. There are many historical buildings related to their religions and cultures. Deyrul Zafaran Monastery, Kasımiye Madrasa, Mor Gabriel Monastery and Grand Mosque are worthly of special mention. Dara Ancient City is known as the most important frontier fortress of Rome, and the ruins of churches, palace, bazaar, amoury and water dam can still be seen in the city.

Filigree (Telkari) ; The art of traditional silver work. Extremely thin wires of silver are fused together to form accessaries or other items, like trays, belts bracelets, mirror frames, and so on. All of the works from the design  to the creation are carried by the same person. This is the only one in the World.

Almond Candy ; Almonds growing  naturally in this region and are roasted with sugar. It sounds like normal. What’s the special?? Mardin’s almond candy is blue color dyed by the root of Lahore tree growing in the region. Try one from real bule color candies, because they loose their color and turn white once they become old.

Mardin’s Cuisine;

Mardin cuisine is very colorful just like their culture. Here is the place gathering people of many races, religious, languages and cultures. So there are many unique flavors which have been reflected many features of their culture since Mesopotamian era. In face, most of their recipes cannot be imitated in many parts of Turkey and only the local people can make special tastes of dishes. Furthermore, 7 products of Mardin’s cuisine are registered with geographical indications and loved by Turkish people, which are Badem Sekeri (almond candy), sembusek (Stuffed savory pastry), Kaburga dolmasi (stuffed ribs), mumbar dolmasi (stuffed sheep sausages), kilice coregi (pastries with a variety of spices), bulguru, and Ikbebet (boiled stuffed meatballs).
